1080p is a category of HDTV video modes, with the number 1080 representing 1,080 lines of vertical resolution (1080 horizontal scan lines) and “p” standing for “progressive scan.” “Progressive scan” means the image is not interlaced. 1080p is often referred to as “full HD” or “full high definition,” which is different from 1080i which is not “full HD.”

“Full high definition” creates a wide screen of 16:9 with a resolution of 1920 pixels. Combine that with the vertical resolution and you have 2,073,600 pixels. What that means to you is an incredible screen resolution that is the future in digital video.

The Canon VIXIA HF S10 ($1,199) will amazingly capture still photos at 6 megapixels while also simultaneously recording video. Videos are recorded to either a 32GB internal flash drive or a removable SDHC card. The 24p mode is really sweet for a film-like feel.

The Panasonic HDC-SD9 ($1,099) is so thin yet packed with so much memory. With the 32GB SDHC card, the HDC-SD9 can hold up to 58 hours of 1080p/24 footage. The camcorder starts at $799 but will cost extra for the SDHC/SD cards or an internal 60GB hard drive.

The Sony HDR-SR11 ($740) features a huge 60GB internal flash drive and at a nice rate. The high capacity InfoLithium Battery allows up to 2.5 hours recording time.

They say sound is as important to film/video as the actual picture so many will love the 5.1 Dolby Digital to 8GB of internal memory that the Sony HDR-UX20 ($1,000) offers. The Zeiss lens with optical image stabilization is nice and it records to MPEG-4. The major beef with the camera is the DVD writer that makes the camera so much bigger and heavier than its competitors.
