Geotagging with GPS-Enabled Cameras

Geotagging with GPS-Enabled Cameras

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, in the world of GPS enabled cameras, it’s more in a few – location, location, location. People always want to know where and when a particular photo was taken and with “geotagging” it’s easy to answer that question.

[easyshare-right]“Geotagging” will record every single shot with information such as the location, time, and date. Individuals may view the photos later based on a location on a Google map or integrate into Flickr geotagging for sharing purposes. Geotagging GPS units for digital cameras average $75-$400.

GPS enabled cameras are offered in one of two ways. Either an individual will invest in a digital camera that features a built in GPS unit or the individual will invest in a hand-held GPS until that works in association with the digital camera. Special GPS software is needed in addition to the unit in order to view the photos as they were intended for the computer.

The automatic photo geo-tagging features is very useful and handy for today’s traveller. For me, in particular, I like taking lots of photos, since there is no film costs involved anyway. In the past, I come home from an extended trip and all the images and places begin to blur into one, and I cannot identify where and when I took these photos. I ended up having to look up my journal, compare the dates and manually tagging them. You can imagine how much time that took. You mentioned an additional feauture of uploading the pictures directly to Picturetown where it conducts searches based on the location. I don’t know Picturetown, but I’ll find out. I guess this is another great feature!

As I was reading the product review, I was wondering what the price would be as a GPS alone cost money. But hey, the Nikon COOLPIX P6000 at ($499) is quite a reasonable price.
