HD Radio
HD radio is being labeled as “the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago.” But is it all hype? Here’s the facts.

Pros:
- FM stations with proposed CD quality sound
- AM stations with former FM quality sound
- Clear reception with no audio distortion
- More programming (Music, Talk, News, etc)
- Real-time artist and song ID’s
- Free of charge
Cons:
- Users must upgrade their radio and purchase a converter
- Users should upgrade their audio equipment to 5.1 or 7.1
- Sound quality for FM stations does not always live up to CD quality
HD radio enables stations to simulcast both digital and analog audio within the same channel (hybridized digital-analog signal) as well as add new FM channels and text information. Mixed with the high quality sound and many consumers are excited about the transformation.
As of May 2009, there were more stations in the world on the air with HD radio technology than any other digital format. More than 1,900 stations in the United States (covering approx. 84%) broadcast in HD.

Unfortunately consumers will have to update their radios to enjoy HD radio. While radio stations and HD radios lobbyists are making this sound like no big deal, it’s still at least another $150-$200 out of your pocket. And that’s not counting what it will cost to truly enjoy HD radio – in 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby Digital surround sound.
However, HD radio still holds an advantage over Sirius because it does not charge a subscription fee. HD radio also will eventually include text messaging so consumers can receive real-time weather forecasts, traffic updates, etc directly on the radio. That type of local coverage is something satellite radio cannot even begin to match. However, Sirius still holds the edge on a wider selection of programs including Howard Stern.
Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Lower, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MINI, Scion, and Volvo all will or have current 2009 models offered with HD radio as part of the model’s standard package. Expect more companies and models to jump on this opportunity in the next couple of years.
Consumers not planning on purchasing a new model may update their current vehicle to HD radio by purchasing a converter and head unit. Some individuals may have the knowledge to install the units personally while others can have it installed for a cheap rate. Most of these converters and head units start at just under $100. Others will likely update radios in the home or office by purchasing a new HD radio or alarm clock. Another cool accessory available will dock your iPod and will utilize iTunes Tagging to build your music library.
